Week 26: Home Again

Hey everyone!

Guess who forgot to post the LAST BLOG POST!!! (Hint: it's me!)

I got home on Wednesday (much to my Mom's surprise, because I told her I was coming home Sunday). I've had a few great days hanging out at home, but it's time to wrap up this semester.

First, Prague. We were there for two days and it was one of my favorite places I visited. For one, it's so OLD. We watched animatronics on the 600-year-old astronomical clock and crossed a 600-year-old bridge. We toured the largest ancient castle in the world as well as the Old Town of Prague. It was a fabulous way to end the trip.

Here's a picture of the castle!

Now for the reflections. It's been 6 months since I first left for Australia. I've been to a new school, visited more than 15 countries, and circled the entire globe. I snorkeled with a sea turtle, made Thai food in Thailand, nearly melted in Petra, lost my phone for a few hours, and took at least 5 free walking tours. I went out of my comfort zone, tried some new things, and made new friends from all over. This has been an incredible experience for me and I'm so glad I took the leap.

I'm about to go back to school. I wonder how strange the familiar will feel after so much time away. The study abroad office keeps warning us of "reverse culture shock." Maybe I'll feel it, but regardless, I'm excited to see my friends again and start my last year of college. It's just another adventure in a long list.

Thank you so much for following my blog this semester. I hope I've been remotely interesting.

Over and out.

Week 25: Hundreds of Pictures

Hello from Vienna!

It's been another jam-packed week for me and my lovely travel companion. A lot has happened. So much, in fact, that I've probably forgotten about most of it.

We went back to Croatia to spend a day in Zagreb, then took a bus to Budapest, had a night in Bratislava, and now we're here.

I've been taking lots of pictures on my camera. We went on a tour of Vienna yesterday and I spent almost the whole time ignoring the guide in favor of wandering away from the group to get a better angle.

There's something to the idea that you should enjoy a place without photographing it. Ten years from now, though, the photographs will be a useful tool to jog my memory. We're going to so many places for so little time that they really blend together. I'm going to want to know down the line if the Sea Organ from last week is in Split or Zadar (it's Zadar). And it's much easier to show people how beautiful a place is than to explain.

Unlike a lot of other people who photograph everything, I don't love taking selfies at these places. I'm not interested in seeing pictures of myself in front of landmarks for a few reasons. First of all, you can't focus on tiny me in the foreground and the gigantic vista in the background. I'm going to be washed out or the background will be dark. Something will be blurry. And I'll be too small in the picture unless it's zoomed in too close to see what's behind me.

My pictures generally don't include me, with a few exceptions because it is nice to have pictures of yourself with your friends. I'm sure you've noticed by now that none of my Instagram photos from this trip actually include my face. (If not, you're not spending enough time on my Instagram. Click here to catch up.)

And for everyone else, here are some pictures for this week!

Week 24: Whirlwind

Hey!

I know it’s Monday, which means that for the first time since I started this blog, I’m undeniably late. In my defense, I’ve completely lost all sense of time. We’ve been to so many places that the days have begun to blur together.

Okay, that sounds bad to me too. But I’ve been to 4 cities in 3 countries since last Sunday. I’m losing track of it all because so much has happened.

Last Monday, we nearly missed our flight from Istanbul to Sarajevo. We made it, thanks to some lovely travelers who let us cut in front of them in the passport line. It turned out that our bags had not taken the journey with us. Either leg. They were still in Tel Aviv. There was nothing we could do except for continue to the hostel without them. We were fortunate enough to get them the next morning, delivered straight to the hostel without further incident.

That was not the only mishap of the trip so far. On Saturday, we went on a bus from Zadar, Croatia to the Nin lagoon. Due to some unclear signage at a bus stop, we got off in a hurry at the wrong place. In the rush, I dropped my phone. It took a kind restauranteur and a whole lot of phone calls, but we managed to flag down the driver. Of course, I had to wait until we were back at the bus station in Zadar before I could actually get it back.

These incidents have been stressful, but the rest of the trip is incredible. Sarajevo is a fascinating place. We learned about the longest siege in modern history, which was still going on when I was born. Our tour guide told us about the shrapnel collection she had as a kid and showed us “Sarajevo Roses,” indents in the concrete from where a shell had hit. We also went to a few museums and hung around in Old Town Sarajevo.

The Dalmatian Coast of Croatia was a lot more laid back. We went to the beach in Split and then made our way up the coast to Zadar. We walked around the city, which is ancient and full of magnificent old buildings. We swam at the Sea Organ (Google it. Seriously.) and watched the sun set over the Adriatic. Then, we went to Nin, where we had a great afternoon at the beach despite the misadventure with my phone.

Yesterday, we took a bus to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. We climbed a pretty big hill to a castle. The view was awesome, but thunder started as soon as we reached the top. It started pouring before we made it back to our hostel. We managed to hide from the worst of it, but that basically ended our night in town. This morning, we got up a bit earlier and went exploring. Ljubljana is a small city, but it’s got charm (and a canal).

And now it’s time for some pictures!!!

We’re back in Croatia for the afternoon, so I’m gonna go explore with my travel buddy. See you Sunday!
